Schooling livery explained:
when your horse needs it

A grey cantering in the arena, with the words Schooling livery explained

Schooling livery means your horse lives at Pentonville Lodge and is schooled by Nikki Ward — UKCC Level 3, with 30 years’ experience producing show jumpers — with full care included. It’s one of the most effective ways to move a horse forward, and we have four stables available now.

When does a horse need it?

  • Young horses starting their jumping careers, who need correct, consistent foundations from day one.
  • Horses coming back into work after time off, once your vet is happy, needing a careful, progressive return.
  • Horses with a habit — rushing, stopping, or getting strong — where an experienced rider can reset the pattern.
  • Before the season, to arrive at the first show fit, confident and jumping well.
  • Before a sale — a well-schooled, well-presented horse is easier to sell and worth more.
  • Busy owners whose horse deserves more work than life currently allows.

What to expect

Every horse gets a programme built around them: flatwork for balance and rhythm, gridwork to build technique and confidence, courses when they’re ready, and hacking to keep minds fresh. Nikki’s approach comes from years of training with some of the sport’s great teachers — including Lars Sederholm, whose ethics of horse psychology and care still shape how she works.

Meanwhile your horse enjoys full livery: daily care, feeding, rugging, turnout and a floodlit arena and show jumping field to work in.

You stay involved

This isn’t sending your horse away. Owners are welcome to come and watch, ride their own horse, and have coaching sessions with Nikki so you and your horse progress together — and you’ll know exactly how things are going.

The price

  • £350 per horse, per week, including all feed, haylage and Auboise bedding.
  • Competing and travel to shows are arranged on top.
  • Four stables available now.
