Your first show is exciting, a little nerve-racking, and over before you know it. A bit of planning means you can enjoy it — here’s how to get from the entry form to the final fence.
Choose the right show
- Start small. Local unaffiliated shows and clear-round classes are perfect for a first outing — relaxed, friendly and no pressure.
- Pick a height you jump easily at home, not the height you hope to jump. Confidence first, height later.
- Affiliated shows (British Showjumping) come next, with membership and horse registration; their website explains the steps.
The week before
- Check the schedule for class times, entry details and the dress code.
- Make sure your horse’s passport and vaccinations are up to date — most shows check.
- Clean your tack, check your lorry or trailer, and plan your route and timings.
What to pack
- For your horse: passport, saddle and bridle, boots, studs if you use them, haynet, water and a bucket, a rug or cooler, and a grooming kit.
- For you: riding hat to current standards, show jacket, white or cream breeches, boots, gloves, and something warm and waterproof.
- Handy extras: a first-aid kit for horse and rider, a hoof pick, spare lead rope, snacks, and cash for entries on the day.
On the day
- Arrive early — at least an hour before your class — so neither of you feels rushed.
- Walk the course. Count your strides, plan your turns, and note where the start and finish are.
- Warm up wisely. Pass other riders left shoulder to left shoulder, call out before you jump a practice fence, and don’t over-jump: a few good fences are better than many.
- Ride your plan, breathe, and remember to smile when you go through the finish.
Afterwards
Look after your horse first — water, a cooler and a walk to settle — then celebrate. Whatever the result, write down one thing that went well and one thing to work on. That’s how good riders get better.
